The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta American Association, U.S.A. ("Order of Malta") is a worldwide, lay, religious order of the Roman Catholic Church, which seeks to glorify God by promoting the sanctification of each member through his or her work with the sick and the poor and witness of the Catholic faith.

The Order carries out its charitable works for the sick, the needy and refugees without distinction of religion, race, origin or age.

Over the years, the Order has also been referred to as the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, the Knights Hospitaller and the acronym SMOM, shorthand for Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

In the United States there are three Associations established by decree of the Grand Master and deliberative vote of the Sovereign Council of the Order headquartered in Rome: the American Association, U.S.A.; the Western Association, U.S.A.; and the Federal Association, U.S.A.

Daily Prayer of the Order of Malta (Oratio Equitum)

Lord Jesus, Thou has seen fit to enlist me for Thy service in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.  I humbly entreat Thee through the intercession of the most holy Virgin of Philermo, of St. John the Baptist, Blessed Fra Gerard, and all the Saints, to keep me faithful to the traditions of our Order.  Be it mine to practice and defend the Catholic, the Apostolic, the Roman faith against the enemies of religion; be it mine to practice charity towards my neighbors, especially the poor and the sick.  Give me the strength I need to carry out this my resolve, forgetful of myself, learning ever from Thy holy Gospel a spirit of deep and generous Christian devotion, striving ever to promote God's glory, the world's peace, and all that may benefit the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

Thoughts of the Month

Prayer is one of the essential activities of Human Life!

"Start and end the day with prayer.  Come to God as a child.  If you find it hard to pray you can say, "Come Holy Spirit, guide me, protect me, clear out my mind so that I can pray."

-Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Il Papa's Corner:

"The presence of many sick pilgrims at Lourdes, and of the volunteers who accompany them, helps us to reflect on the maternal and tender care that the Virgin expresses towards human pain and suffering. Associated with the Sacrifice of Christ, Mary, Mater Dolorosa, who at the foot of the Cross suffers with her divine Son, is felt to be especially near by the Christian community, which gathers around its suffering members who bear the signs of the passion of the Lord. Mary suffers with those who are in affliction, with them she hopes, and she is their comfort, supporting them with her maternal help. And is it not perhaps true that the spiritual experience of very many sick people leads us to understand increasingly that "the Divine Redeemer wishes to penetrate the soul of every sufferer through the heart of his holy Mother, the first and the most exalted of all the redeemed"?

-Pope Benedict XVI
